The vision behind MAKUS: designer induction hobs in colour
MAKUS was founded by Merel Philippart, with a clear mission: to make the switch to induction appealing. Not just functionally, but also visually. Because the kitchen is no longer just a place to cook, but an important part of the interior.
From Amsterdam, Merel and her team are building a brand that brings together design, sustainability, and technology. In this interview, she talks about the origin of MAKUS, her vision for the kitchen industry, and what makes the brand different.
Why did you found MAKUS?
"Because I want to help the Netherlands become more sustainable, but in style. Often, the emphasis in sustainability is on technology, and not on beauty. In other words: it's usually just ugly. I think that's a real shame. I think sustainability is important, but it should remain a little fun.
The induction hob is a prime example of this. The whole of the Netherlands will have to make the switch to induction, because in the long run, cooking on induction is better for the environment. All induction hobs currently look the same: shiny and plain black. I only think that looks good in some kitchens. But usually, I find it spoils an atmospheric kitchen."
What does MAKUS do differently?
"MAKUS sees the induction hob not just as a cooking tool and therefore purely functional, but also as an item to design as part of the entire kitchen. With a MAKUS, you create more than just a place to cook; you create atmosphere. The induction hob as an inseparable part of the kitchen design."
What do you want to achieve?
"All of Europe cooking on induction in style. Or at least the part that values an atmospheric kitchen."
Where do you get your energy from?
"Shared enthusiasm. MAKUS started small and has been able to grow further, thanks to the enthusiasm of others about the product, to where it stands now: a healthy company with beautiful first collections on the market."
What characterises MAKUS?
"MAKUS strives for sustainable relationships, on all fronts. From users to suppliers, sales partners, and nature. No quick fixes, but well-considered choices. In our products, we combine the highest quality standards with refined design."
Is it difficult to break through as a new player in the kitchen industry?
"It's not easy. Part of the kitchen industry is traditional and mainly focuses on functionality. If you don't value aesthetics much, MAKUS is harder to place. At the same time, there are also many parties open to new ideas and design.
The first place where we were welcomed with open arms was at Asto in Rotterdam. MAKUS was immediately understood there. The same applies to Keukenstudio Stormink in Gorssel."
