Noise when cooking on induction: what do you hear and why is it normal?
Do you hear a buzzing or humming sound while cooking on induction? That is completely normal. Almost every induction hob makes a sound during use. This is inherent to the technology and says nothing about the quality of the hob.

Where does the sound come from?
It is not the induction hob itself that makes the sound, but the pan on it.
With induction, an electric field is generated in the hob. This field causes current to flow in the pan. This current sets the particles in the pan in motion. This causes the pan to heat up and allows you to cook.
This movement also causes vibrations. And you hear these vibrations as sound.
Buzzing, humming or beeping
While cooking, you may hear various sounds: a soft buzzing or humming sound, sometimes a higher pitched beep.
This is normal behaviour for induction. If you remove the pan from the cooking zone, the sound stops immediately.
Differences between pans
Some pans make more noise than others. This is related to the material and construction of the pan.
Pans made of solid material, such as cast iron or aluminium, conduct well and often make less noise.
Cheaper pans often consist of multiple layers. Small vibrations can occur between these layers, causing you to hear more sound.
What can you do yourself?
Do you want to minimise noise while cooking? Then pay attention to the quality of your pans. Heavier pans with a good base often give the best result.
